Art Turns. World Turns.

I just got a notification on my Instagram about my memories in 2018, apparently today a year ago my best friend and I visited an art exhibition in the MACAN Museum. I opened the photos on my laptop to flash back and I think it's a good idea to share those memories here on my blog for archiving, so here it is.
The MACAN (Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara) Museum is a contemporary art museum that has been present in Jakarta since November 2017. At its opening MACAN carried out its inaugural exhibition titled "Art Turns. World Turns." This exhibition was held from 4 November 2017 until 18 March 2018. As an art enthusiast, I wouldn't miss to visit this exhibition.
This exhibition featured 90 works of Indonesian and international artists from the museum's collection. Curated jointly by Agung Hujatnika and Charles Esche, the works that displayed explored the narratives of the history of Indonesian art and the world in 178 years.

The artworks were placed in four sections based on Indonesian history from pre-independence times to the present. Four parts were named: Land, Home, People; Independence and After; Struggles Around Form and Content; Global Soup. Throughout the four sections, Indonesian art history was confronted with works from abroad, to create dialogue that shows similarities, differences, and dependencies from time to time.

The most favorite artworks that become major photo spot, none other than Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room. This became the must visited spot in the museum. Visitors were willing to queue for hours just to spend around seconds in this room. Since we visited early in the morning and not many people around, we didn't take a lot of time to queue.
Infinity Mirrored Room is basically a cube-shaped dark room illuminated by colorful polka-dot lights. The walls are covered with mirrors and there are puddles around the floor that created an illusion of infinity space. The staff allowed visitors to be inside the room only for 40 seconds and they used the time watch, but after 40 seconds I continued to queue again because it wasn't enough for me to admire the artworks & take photos of course. Lol.

There is also a merchandise store where visitors could buy artworks and souvenirs, as well as a coffee shop next to it.
As we wanted to leave, we saw a room next to the escalator called Floating Garden which attracted my attention. Actually this room is for Children’s Art Space. A dedicated platform in the museum to educate children about art and acts as a medium for them to get to know art since early age. Artworks from Entang Wiharso could be seen in this area.
