Use Your Illusion
Sunday, July 26, 2020
Before Jakarta was locked up due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I had a chance to visit an art exhibition titled Use Your Illusion. That was the last time I visited a public place before quarantines. The exhibition was held at Edwin's Gallery, Kemang, South Jakarta from 29 January to 16 February 2020. I visited it with my best friend there was no visitor at that time, only us, it kinda felt like we were in our own private art gallery. Lol.
Curated by Zarani Risjad, the exhibition invited 14 artists to dig deeper into the boundary between illusion and reality from various perspectives. Illusion is often regarded as something imaginative and a source of various kinds of entertainment, such as magicians, haunted house performances to several shows that can be associated with cinema and technology.
The exploration of the artists in this exhibition departed from the matter around the boundary between illusion and reality and how it could offer a perspective that is relevant to reality. All artworks on display were directly selected by considering the compatibility between the work and the theme. Visitors were shown to many art installations that would inspire imagination as you can see from some pictures I took below.
